My trio of serious faces - love them! Actually, the little girl twirling was very happy - just dancing around waiting for her mama!

Today I am in Kisumu, trying to get my visa extended, except, of course, I can't get it extended until it's almost expired. grrrrr. So I have to come back the 21st or the 22nd and extend it then. They said, "You see, it is too new right now. You don't need to extend it yet." I asked if perhaps I could just get a new visa and they said "Yes, it would cost $50." I asked why it was twice as much as it was in Nairobi (I paid $25 for this visa). They said it had "changed." Oy. So I'll come back. It shouldn't be too hard, I was just hoping to not have to.

I saw a University of Michigan sweatshirt! It totally cracked me up - this teeny, tiny little kid, running around Mbita with a Michigan sweatshirt - little does UofM know how far their fan base reaches. j/k. On the ferry ride, I saw some more cool logos. I saw a man carrying a bag from the "San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium" and another man wearing a New York Dodgers jacket. Then I got in my matatu and there was a huge Lakers sticker pasted across the front. Pretty great.

Seriously, those matatus are crazy - honking constantly, passing on blind curves, stuffing a bazillion people in there - sometimes I just clothes my eyes and pray we will all get there in one piece. Which of course, we all do. I was slightly nauseated this morning though, so the crazy ride didn't really help AND someone decided to bring some very stinky fish along for the ride. Whew! Feeling better now though. :)

I am finally posting some more pictures - my internet in Mbita wasn't working very well, so I couldn't get anything to load last night. Until next time...

My accommodations - Soti's house and my bathroom for the next month. And last night, when I went in there to use it, I shared it with many, many of my cockroach friends. I kept thinking one would drop on me...sure makes you pee fast! :)

Some of the staff at the clinic. From the right: Millicent (registering), Patroba (grounds), and Kennedy (security guard).
Waiting to take the ferry to Mbita.

  1. I am loving these pictures! They are so beautiful. That "toilet" is incredible. And transportation sounds so scary! What an experience. I'm sure it's frustrating when there's not much for you to do, but it sounds like work is picking up and that you're learning a TON. Can't wait to see more!

  3. Oh man, reading about all of the logos and swag from the states cracks me up. So true! It was my intital plan in ET to snap a photo of every hilarious Tshirt or bumper stick in English that I saw; unfortunately this became logistically difficult :) Also, hang in there with those bugs! oh man.
